Poolside Pergola

Poolside Pergola:

When Beacon Hill based clients acquired a new summer home for
their extended family in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts formerly
owned by the Secretary of the Navy under Gerald Ford, the 18-acre
site and 1880’s home required a complete restoration and review of
its many scenic attributes. Collaborating with landscape architect
Laura Gibson, the client’s desire for restored pond and ocean views;
John P. Margolis was commissioned to design a new outdoor
structure for entertaining.

The summer season in New England is short, so the homeowners
wanted maximize their family time outside near the new pool with a
number of amenities for all kinds of warm weather activities. John
designed a cedar pergola and barbecue area to incorporate an
existing pool house with bath, kitchen and changing rooms and to
accommodate large-scale dining parties throughout the summer
months.

The owners were particularly taken with San Simeon in Paso Robles,
California, but the materials and scale were inappropriate to the
brutal New England climate. John preferred to borrow from the
estates nearby in the Beaux Arts style. He also looked closely at the
rose gardens at Old Westbury Gardens as a key precedent for his
pergola design.
