BEGGING FOR A BANQUETTE 07-30-2012 I am dying to build out a banquette in my little breakfast nook. The second I moved in I started dreaming up ways that I could make this happen, but considering that it’s a rental, it just seemed a little silly to spend the time and money. But then I saw this space and here I am, suddenly feeling re-inspired and very tempted! First off – I am sort of in awe of this whole layout. The kitchen wraps around the breakfast nook, and I find it so interesting! It feels almost like a hotel or restaurant kitchen – we’re so used to seeing these large spaces that open to the rest of the home these days, that I think this is an interesting alternative…
The windows keep things open, but separate… I’m not sure what I think about that, but I sort of like the idea that you’re in this other ‘room’ away from the bustle and mess a kitchen can sometimes be, and at the same time you can still see what’s going on and feel part of the action. Here’s a peek at the kitchen space…
The space on the other side seems to act as more of a pantry area, housing the wine fridge and multiple spaces for storage along with the oven. The little dishtowel rack is a nice idea for a wall that really wouldn’t’ offer much else in the way of function. And of course a board for collecting recipes and grocery lists! Back to the breakfast nook…
My final favorite detail (I never thought I’d say this … ever) is the TV. Yes, the TV above the buffet. Because let’s be honest. If this were actually my home, I’d be spending many hours here working away, and there have been so many times I’ve wished for a little TV in the dining area in my apartment! Sometimes it’s nice to just flip on the morning news, or have a classic movie to keep you company during late work nights. Because it’s not really a main entertaining space, it doesn’t seem inappropriate, either. Unless, of course, this really is the only dining area. In which case, adios TV! What do you think about this unique layout? Does it work for you? *design by deulonder via dustjacket attic

Korokoro House, New Zealand. Lovely window seats. Storage drawers underneath. For our purposes, make them bigger to hold twin mattresses, to accommodate extra overnight guests. Open storage for wine, glasses, etc is useful.
